Horticulture Research International (became Warwick HRI, closed 2009)
UK
Was the UK government's main testing and development arm for market gardening, fruit and related crops. Under Mike Wilson, who became HRI's director in 1999, it took on a markedly pro-GM trajectory. Wilson claimed biotechnology was a key growth area for horticulture and that he had "brought new contacts to the organisation which, I believe, will bring in substantial sums of money." In 2000 he controversially shut down a highly regarded non-GM HRI research centre that had pioneered biological pest control, among other alternatives to GM. In 2003, HRI was merged with the University of Warwick and then reconstituted as Warwick HRI. Wilson said this had "secured the future of UK horticultural research and development" but in 2009 Warwick decided to close down Warwick HRI as the centre was losing the university £2 million a year.
