Residents of California who developed cancer linked to herbicides produced by Monsanto have filed a lawsuit against the biotech company, attorney Michael Miller said in a statement on Thursday.
"Monsanto’s misinformation campaign is costing lives," Miller, who filed the lawsuit on behalf of California residents Brenda and James Huerta, stated. "Brenda and James’ lawsuit will force Monsanto to face the human consequences of their lives."
According to the lawsuit, Brenda and James Huerta lived on a commercial sod farm in California’s Riverside County where they were frequently exposed to the Monsanto produced herbicide Roundup. Brenda was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2013 as a result of the exposure, the suit alleges.
In March 2015, a World Health Organization panel released a study that unanimously concluded there is sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in animals exposed to glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup. The panel also determined that glyphosate is probably carcinogenic to humans.
Monsanto is currently suing to block California from listing glyphosate as a known carcinogen.
More than 250 million pounds of glyphosate are applied to fields in the United States annually, according to the US Geological Survey.
