Steve Marsh Appeal
Steve Marsh's appeal will be heard before three judges, from March 23 to 25 in the WA Supreme Court. 70% of his organic farm was decertified after GM canola, that his neighbour Baxter had swathed, blew onto Steve's land in 2010. Justice Martin's judgement rejected Marsh's claim for $85,000 compensation and a permanent injunction against growing GM canola. The appeal is high stakes for both sides as $800,000 in court costs were awarded.
Oz GM Bananas Stalled
A human feeding trial in the USA has stalled. No permit was issued for the GM bananas to be exported from Australia where they were created. We complained that the licences for the banana experiments prohibited animals and humans from eating the fruit and this dispute with the regulator is unresolved. We are working with African and Indian groups to ensure the 'bent' bananas are not grown there.
Dairy Australia GM Ryegrass
Biotech lobbyist Paula Fitzgerald got a feisty response when dairy farmers met across Victoria this month. Most farmers will not back GM ryegrass R&D with their hard-earned grower levies, on the promise of a GM crop in 2020 that may boost milk output. We seek to change the R&D priorities of DA's $50 million pa business as it uses our taxes, grower levies and corporate dollars for research, commerce and promotion.
