Ministry of Agriculture hasn't received application to approve Monsanto's new GM soybean.

A reliable source in China says that the Ministry of Agriculture on May 20 2013 issued an official letter confirming: "Our Ministry has not received application documents for a Safety Certificate for GM soybean Intacta RR2 Pro".

This indicates that Monsanto did not submit an application for a safety certificate for its GM soybean Intacta RR2 Pro. The safety certificate from the Ministry of Agriculture is a prerequisite for China importing RR2 soybeans, for example, from Brazil.

Brazilian soy producers have been warned not to plant RR2 until China approves it. But China has never given any indication that it is prepared to approve RR2. The Chinese government recently told a Brazilian delegation that it wants non-GM soy for the better-off sector of its population, even if it is more expensive. Europe, on the other hand, has already approved RR2 for import.

Our source in China commented, "Resistance against Monsanto within China is building up to intense level." The government seems to be listening. In May, China destroyed three shipments of GM corn from the US.
