Don’t buy this GM spin

With regard to the letter from Dr Julian Little on GM, he totally misses the point when it comes to Morrisons’ decision to allow the use of GM soy.
Although animal producers spend a lot on feed, the difference in cost between GM and non-GM feed is tiny, amounting to less than three pence per kilo of chicken meat. The costs connected to GM feed won’t make or break the poultry sector.
Dr Little also says trillions of meals of GM foods have been consumed without a single substantiated health issue reported. The key word is substantiated. These meals have all been eaten in countries like the US where foods containing GM do not have to be labelled.
In countries like the UK, where they do, food purveyors keep GM ingredients out of their products because consumers refuse to purchase foods labelled ‘contains GM’. Even Morrisons keeps GM ingredients out of its own labels. They let poultry producers use GM feed because of EU regulations that allow food produced from animals fed GM feed to be put on the market without telling consumers.
The fact is consumers are happy to pay more for food produced with non GM feed.
