If you're a regular visitor to GM-free Scotland's news, analysis and comment you'll be aware of what emerges as the GM threads are drawn together: no matter how bad each individual piece of news is, when you join all the dots, the bigger picture is always much, much worse.
In putting our articles together, the greatest hurdle to be overcome is often getting hold of all the dots to start with. One invaluable source of information over the years has been the regular, global news reviews prepared by 'GM Watch'.
Founded in 1998, this organisation has created the major library and memory bank covering all the facets of the GM issue. It consistently and painstakingly provides referenced data with links to background material. The scale of the effort needed to manage the incessant stream of new information, and thoroughness of GM Watch's research are staggering.
Most valuable of all, as Friends of the Earth has pointed out, is that the global data which GM Watch has at its finger tips provides up-to-date counter-information against the “divide-and-rule tactics and spin operations used by the biotech juggernaut”.
Testimony to GM Watch's effectiveness is that GM proponents clearly see it as a real threat. In 2008, its website suffered a series of orchestrated attacks, the last of which closed down its website. Undaunted, or perhaps even more determined, and with a lot of hard work and help from its supporters, the GM Watch data-base was fully re-instated.
While the biotech industry devotes hundreds of millions of dollars on global PR, marketing, lobbying, buying politician's support, and commissioning GM-friendly science, GM Watch is not-for-profit and operates on a shoestring. It can use your help.
Here's a suggestion for a good deed to get 2012 off to a really good start: make a donation to GM Watch. It doesn't have to be huge to be helpful, for instance GBP25 (less than 50p per week) would be welcome.
Donations can be made online at www.gmwatch.org/donations , or by cheque made out to 'NGIN' at 'GMWatch, 26 Pottergate, Norwich, NR2 1DX'.
Thank You. Your Donation Makes A Difference!!!
