THE Bishop of Liverpool, the Right Rev James Jones, has called on Christians to save the environment.

Last night he was launching his new book, Jesus and the Earth, at the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral.  He gave a talk and then signed copies of the text, which is published by the missionary charity SPCK.

The book says that genetically modified crops serve the rich rather than the poor and argues that the Earth and, in turn the human race, are in grave danger because of the violence that has been done to the planet.  The book was written while the Right Rev Jones was taking time off for study.

Speaking before the launch last night he said: "The Church has a duty to the environment. If you go back to the Bible and look at it then as Christians we need to consider what we are doing to the planet.

"I think that there should be an independent investigation on behalf of the Government into the effects of GM foods. I have written this book in a way that is ideal for schools and for people to learn from in groups. There are points to discuss at the end of each chapter."
