Norfolk shoppers tell Bernard Matthews to stuff his GM turkeys GREENPEACE: NORWICH CAMPAIGN GROUP
Issued Friday 24th November
On Saturday 25th November, local Greenpeace activists will be inviting shoppers at Tesco in Harford Bridge to tell Bernard Matthews to stuff his GM turkeys by sending him parcels of non-GM turkey feed.
Greenpeace will be setting up a huge sign saying "Tell Bernard Matthews to stuff his GM turkeys" and will invite shoppers to fill and send an envelope with non-GM turkey feed from the large pile of feed they will have on display.
This action follows Greenpeace’s delivery of three tonnes of GM free turkey feed to the headquarters of Bernard Matthews on Thursday.
Despite massive public rejection of GM food, GM is still sneaking into the UK and being fed to animals. Bernard Matthews is one of a number of top UK food companies which continue to use GM animal feed in the production of their food products. These companies claim that it is impossible to buy GM free animal feed.
An NOP poll conducted for Greenpeace in September this year found that 67% of respondents were opposed to farm animals being fed GM crops. (1)
Local Greenpeace activist Nicole Cook explained: " Bernard Matthews claims it is impossible to find GM free feed, we know that’s not true. Greenpeace delivered three tonnes of GM-free turkey feed to him on Thursday and now the people of Norfolk are asking him to use it".
Major UK supermarkets and food producers are already switching to GM free animal feed. In the last week alone McDonalds and Burger King both announced that they will be GM free next year. Major supermarkets like Iceland have also worked hard to eliminate GM ingredients from animal
feed.
Cook continued, "The people of Norfolk are telling Bernard Matthews to stuff his GM turkeys and instead give them what they want - GM-free food".
A full guide to which turkeys are GM-fed and which are not is available in the Greenpeace Shopper’s Guide to GM at www.greenpeace.org.uk Copies of the guide will also be given away free on Saturday.
