Labelling meat and milk to inform consumers it is from the offspring of cloned animals would be impossible, Farming Minister James Paice announced today.
The minister told a committee of MPs there was no way of tracing produce back to cloned cows and pigs, and scientists had no way of telling it apart.
He also restated that there were no known health risks from consuming food from the progeny of genetically identical animals.
Mr Paice said: "It is not possible to identify whether milk or meat is from a clone, let alone the offspring of a clone."
The farming minister described the problems of labelling food from an animal that descended from a clone as a "conundrum that is unsolvable".
He added: "It is impossible to have an enforceable system that would enable the consumer to make that choice."
