China hasn’t approved import of Monsanto RR2 Xtend soybeans, say activists

Beijing Food Safety Volunteers received letter from agriculture ministry saying it has not issued the required “safety certificate” to allow the soybeans to be imported

In February 2016, Monsanto announced that China had approved the import of Monsanto RR2 Xtend soybeans tolerant to both glyphosate + dicamba herbicides.

However, a group of Chinese food safety activists, the Beijing Food Safety Volunteers, has received an official letter from China’s agriculture ministry stating:
- China's agriculture ministry has not issued a ”safety certificate" to import Monsanto RR2 Xtend soybeans tolerant to both glyphosate + dicamba herbicides.
- China's agriculture ministry "never accepted Monsanto's safety evaluation application material for glyphosate-tolerant + dicamba-tolerant GM soybeans (MON87708×MON89788)”.
- China's agriculture ministry also did not receive the "Agricultural GM Safety Evaluation Application Report" for Monsanto's glyphosate-tolerant + dicamba-tolerant GM soybeans (MON87708×MON89788).

The evidence, including the statement from the Beijing Food Safety Volunteers and the letter from the Chinese agriculture ministry, is posted in Chinese with English translation on the website of Chen-I-Wan.

Is Monsanto lying about getting Chinese approval? Watch this space.
