Potentially unsafe GM golden rice to be available "soon" in Bangladesh

GM rice has not been shown safe to eat or to perform well in the field

GM golden rice has not been tested to show it's safe for consumption – at least no safety study has been published to date. An efficacy (not safety) study performed in Chinese schoolchildren without the informed consent of their parents was retracted due to this ethical failure.

The GMO lobby is exploiting the weak regulatory system in Bangladesh to foist a potentially unsafe GM product onto the country's farmers and consumers.

It is unclear as to whether the repeated agronomic problems suffered by the crop have been solved.

Golden rice, a new variety of rice enriched with Vitamin A will be available soon, said Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzak.

He was talking to reporters after a meeting with International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) at the secretariat yesterday.

"Golden rice is more important than other varieties as it will help fight Vitamin A deficiency. The rice variety has already got clearance in USA, Canada and Australia," he said.

"A committee of the environment ministry will give clearance to the rice for production. We will be able to start cultivation in Bangladesh within two to three months upon getting the clearance," he said.

It will be easier to cultivate golden rice in coastal areas combating salinity condition, the minister said.
