Slovak government move comes after support from 300 organisations
Two lawsuits directed against new European rules for a new generation of GMOs (so-called new genomic techniques – NGTs) were published today on the official judicial portal of the European Union.
In the legal dispute registered under case number C-1034/26, the Slovak Republic acts as the applicant against the European Parliament and the Council of the EU before the Court of Justice of the EU. Simultaneously, a lawsuit before the General Court of the EU in case T-622/26 was published, filed by the German organic plant breeding association Dottenfelder Bio-Saat and others.
The filing of the legal action by the Slovak Republic directly fulfils the pledge made by Prime Minister Robert Fico and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Richard Takáč. Following an off-site government meeting at the Agrokomplex exhibition centre (September 2, 2026), they officially announced their intention to challenge the June European legislation deregulating NGT rules before the Court of Justice of the EU.
With this step, the Government of the Slovak Republic responded to a joint statement and call from more than 300 organisations, experts, and public figures, initiated by the organisation quid est VERITAS in cooperation with the civic initiative Slovakia without GMOs (Slovensko bez GMO).
