End secrecy in lobbying
Do you want to know who's influencing our politicians?
Push the government to end secrecy in lobbying
How often do we feel like the government spends too little time listening to ordinary people, and too much time listening to commercial lobbyists working for corporate interests.
Anyone involved in campaigning against GMOs will be aware of companies spending huge sums of money trying to influence governments. But also that it's often impossible to know who these lobbyists are, which public officials they are lobbying and which areas of policy they are targetting. The same applies to the aviation lobby gunning for airport expansion, the financial sector trying to water down regulation, private healthcare companies lobbying for NHS contracts. The list is endless. Currently in the UK we've no right to know what these lobbyists are up to.
We have a chance right now to stop this secrecy. An influential committee of MPs has told the government it's time to force all lobbyists to register their activities. This would mean we could see who's lobbying whom, and why. The government has just said it will make a decision on whether or not to act this month. The minister in charge, Angela E. Smith, says she hasn't made her mind up yet. That means we've got a chance in the next two weeks to persuade the government to open up lobbying so we can see who they are talking to and what they are discussing.
Please click here [http://www.38degrees.org.uk/registerlobbyists7]<http://www.38degrees.org.uk/registerlobbyists2%5D>to tell the government it's time to end secrecy in lobbying.
The Alliance for Lobbying Transparency (www.lobbyingtransparency.org <http://www.lobbyingtransparency.org> ) will deliver the petition to the minister as she starts her last week at work before her summer break. With politicians desparate to start to regain public trust, and influential groups of MPs on our side, now is our chance to open up lobbying for good. Let's send a poweful message to the UK government for an end to secrecy in lobbying. http://www.38degrees.org.uk/registerlobbyists7
