ITALY:  FISCHLER - "ORGANIC MUST BE FREE OF GM"
5 November, Aiab [short but sweet!]

EU Agriculture Commissioner Fischler announced that "organic has to be free from any trace of GM" on the occasion of his receiving and honorary degree from the Facoltà di Agraria in Bologna.

On the risk of GM contamination to organic products Fischler moreover asserted that EU policies needed to ensure that consumers retained the right to choose between GM foods and GM-free foods.  The commissioner concluded that the "lessons from the food crises must be an essential part of modern agricultural politics."
