Are GM crops expanding in Europe?

  • GM crop cultivation represents a mere 0.06% of agricultural land in the European Union (EU).
  • Far from expanding, the number of hectares of GM crops fell by 2% in 2009 in Europe.
  • The area of GM crops has fallen in Europe every year since 2005.
  • Only 1 GM crop – a Monsanto maize – has been authorised for commercial growing in the EU.
  • It's since been banned for health and environmental reasons in 6 EU Member States.
  • The recent German ban will make GM crop cultivation fall even further in the EU.
  • 75% of all GM crop cultivation in the EU occurs in just two regions of Spain, where it has caused widespread and possibly irreversible contamination of conventional and organic seeds, feed, food and farmland.
  • 14 Member States have now demanded the right to ban GMOs in their territory.
