URGENT CALL FOR HELP - PLEASE SPREAD WIDELY!!

Dear Friends

This is an 11th hour rescue mission to save the GM animal feed ban introduced by the previous Polish government. Its significance is huge; the precedent set by the introduction of this ban could roll right across Europe and present a direct challenge to EU Commission intransigence and national corporate controlled puppet governments. Its failure could lead to a tragedy: an open door policy for GM plants and seeds, as well as animal feeds, in Poland.

The Polish parliament has capitulated but the President, Mr Kaczynski, has the final word. It was his brother who introduced the ban two years ago.

PLEASE use this ready-letter (below) or your own words to convince the President not to abandon this all important step. It is URGENT to write NOW.

The decision can be made at any time, so there is not a moment to lose.

*****LETTER TO THE POLISH PRESIDENT*****

Mr Lech Kaczynski, President of Poland

We wish to pass on to you our full support for the retention of the Animal Feed Act of July 2006, due for enforcement in August 2008. The crucial step, taken two years ago, to protect the health and welfare of Polish citizens and animals by prohibiting the import and use of genetically modified animal feeds, is recognized as a major step forward for the Precautionary Principle enshrined in the European Union protocol, but often by-passed in the interests of profit motivated corporate pressures.

There is no doubt that Poland's reputation as a producer and exporter of high quality foods will be protected and enhanced in the eyes of discerning customers across Europe and beyond, once this Act takes effect. 70% of European citizens have rejected GMO foods and the clear market movement is towards ecologically and traditionally produced foods whose production respects the environment, the natural biodiversity of the countryside and the health and welfare of animals and people.

It would be a regressive step to accept - in effect 'legalise' - the
deliberate contamination of our food - and the food of our children - by delaying or abandoning this Act. GM residues pass through cows' milk and animal flesh onto the plates of unsuspecting citizens. It has been scientifically established that these residues survive in the human gut, altering the molecular structure of human DNA.

We, and farm animals, are thus treated as a giant laboratory experiment whose outcome is entirely unpredictable. And extremely risk prone.

For this reason, France, Austria, Germany and Italy are all moving towards a ban on GM animal feeds, partly inspired and motivated by Poland's highly responsible precedent. There is a plentiful amount of non-GM soya and maize available on the world market for livestock farmers. It is only a lack of segregation at foreign ports that prevents proper channelling to these feeds. Ultimately, due to high CO2 emissions and environmental degradation resulting from the global production and transportation of monocultural, mass-produced feeds - local production of traditional roots, cereals and grasses will prove far more environmentally friendly, cost-effective and in the interest of national food security, than relying on the constantly shifting and highly speculative global market place.

We therefore call upon you, Mr President, to stand up for what is right and not to capitulate to short term political power games in reaching your decision.
