A Victorian farmers' group opposed to the use of genetically modified (GM) seed is pushing for a tribunal to fine GM companies when contaminations occur.

A Wimmera farmer recently had his pure canola crop independently tested and it was found to be contaminated with GM varieties.

The Network of Concerned Farmers' Julie Newman says GM companies can no longer shirk their responsibility for such contaminations.

"What we'd like to see happen is to have a tribunal that evaluates by discussing with markets and supply chain participants, evaluates accurately what they predict the estimated loss would be within 12 months and then that fee is to be payed by the GM company," she said..
