Chamber represents 3.7 million employees and consumers

In 2018 the Austrian Federal Chamber of Labour issued a report (in German) that is in agreement with the European Court of Justice's subsequent ruling that the products of new genetic engineering techniques are GMOs and fall under the EU's GMO legislation.

As the Chamber of Labour states, "Consumers in Europe have spoken out clearly so far against the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food". Therefore, it says, to ensure freedom of choice for consumers, the precautionary principle must be observed; risks to human health, animal welfare and the environment must be evaluated in a comprehensive risk assessment before any marketing authorisation is granted; and adequate labelling and traceability is necessary.

The Austrian Federal Chamber of Labour (BAK) represents the interests of approximately 3.7 million employees and consumers in Austria and is part of the Austrian Social Partnership.
