PROTESTING 'CATTLE' TAKE STORE TO TASK OVER GM MILK

Anti-gm protesters dressed as cows wandered the aisles of Sainsbury's in Newton Abbot at the weekend. The group were part of an alliance of farming and food pressure groups, who have been protesting about the sale of dairy products from GM-fed cows.

Marks & Spencer and the Co-Op already sell milk that is GM-free and the protest group want Sainsbury's to follow suit.

The supermarket giant has carried out a trial in the South East of England of non-GM milk and the firm has confirmed that there has been demand for the product, which will now be offered in more stores. Despite this, the protesters believe more should be done to stop the use of milk from GM-fed herds.

Robert Vint, a member of Genetic Food Alert in South Devon, said: "Three years ago Sainsbury's promised it would phase out the use of all GM feed. Now they are trying to sell a limited range at five pence extra per pint, without giving farmers any of that increase in profits.
