New photo report documents suffering caused by GMO agriculture model
An important photo report on the health problems suffered by Argentine villagers living near GMO soybean and cotton fields has been published by VICE News.
The report explains that the GMO crops are sprayed with pesticides, including glyphosate herbicides, that have led to a large increase in diseases such as cancer and birth defects.
María del Carmen Seveso, a doctor from the city of Saez Peña, is quoted as saying she has no doubt that the pesticides cause cancer and other serious illnesses.
Seveso says that the number of newborns with congenital illnesses at the hospital where she worked jumped from 46 in 1998, around the time that pesticide spraying began in the area, to 186 in 2009.
These findings were included in a study published by the National Health Commission (link provided in the article).
VICE’s memorable report features photos of affected villagers along with their stories. It’s well worth reading and forwarding to contacts.
