Dear Friends

WE NEED YOUR URGENT HELP

BRAZIL: CNTBio IS ABOUT TO APPROVE THE INTRODUCTION OF GE CORN

WE NEED YOUR URGENT HELP

On December 12th, CNTBio will approve the commercial release of GE corn in Brazil.

It will be very helpful if you can send a letter to President Lula da Silva, asking him not to approve the introduction of GE corn into Brazil.

Below is a sample letter that you can use.

Exmo. Senor Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva

Dear Mr. President:

We understand that CNTBio will decide in the next few days whether to approve the commercial growing of GE corn in Brazil.

We would like to express our deep concern about the possibility that GE corn will be approved in Brazil, since corn is an open pollination crop and, therefore, the GE pollen coming from a GE corn fields may contaminate other land whether the farmers want to use GE seed or not. The contamination can travel so far that GE pollen may contaminate other countries.

The corn is a crop of great importance in the basic diet and agriculture of several communities in Brazil, and for some indigenous peoples corn is considered as a sacred crop.

For these reasons, we would like to ask you to listen to the demands of your people, and not to approve the introduction of GE corn in Brazil.

Sincerely
