Non-GM product supply is possible
The Grocer, 28 May 2011
Sir, We were pleased to read Joanna Blythman's comments last week ('Second Opinion', 21 May,). The idea that non-GM products are difficult to source or not available, as the British Poultry Council complains, is wrong. Cert ID Europe is responsible for introducing buyers, for whom non-GM compliance is essential, to many properly certificated suppliers. Under its ProTerra non-GM certification scheme, Cert ID Europe issues traceability certificates of compliance on more than 6.5 million tonnes of non-GM soy products per year.
Today's consumers are now far more aware of the issues surrounding soya cultivation such as deforestation, native population displacement and worker abuse, not to mention animal welfare in the development of GM crops. They will change their buying habits if they do not believe these issues are being addressed correctly.
The buck stops with the supermarkets, which have the power to insist on certificated non-GM from their sugar cane, maize, palm oil, soya and coffee producers. We have contacted the BPC, to see if we can assist in helping to eliminate GM feed in the food chain.
Richard Werran, MD, Cert ID Europe
